Panama’s Anton Valley Is A Little Found Gem To Tour

Visiting Panama with the goal of seeing Anton Valley, I planned to take the Mexicana from Los Angeles International to PTY Tocumen International Airport. Anton Valley is one of several locations I plan to visit to help me discover if it is possible to build a life in Panama. A quick Google search reveals that people are searching for Panama over 500,000 times each day.

The plane trip from LAX to PTY, including a stop in Mexico City, was bearable. The stopover in Mexico City could be frustrating, but on the contrary, it seems that the Mexico City Airport is growing and changing in the best ways and it is now more pleasant than ever.

At Gate 10, I stumbled upon an all-organic restaurant that had really nutritious meals for a very moderate price. Spending an hour at the restaurant geared up me for the following portion of the journey.

Once outside the terminal, the cab is only $28 and it will take you almost anywhere in the city. The Toll Road Corridor is a smooth drive and within 20 minutes I am in the Sheraton Hotel off of Via Israel. A day’s rest in the Sheraton gave me new life for the start my trip to the Anton Valley. I reserved a rental car for just $30 and was ready to go.

A quick two hour trip separates Panama City from Anton Valley. The valley is located inside an inactive volcano crater where you can enjoy cool weather and light rain year-round.

A lot of trekking is done in this beautiful and lush destination. Trekking means covering long distances by foot and connecting with nature in all its forms. Besides trekking, there are many other activities and attractions you can enjoy while you visit The Valley. These can include: El Nispero Zoo, hot springs, the Crafts and Souvenirs Market, The Valley Museum, La Pintada Petroglyphs, Las Mozas and El Macho trickles, and archeology sites. There are also a number of festivals or cultural celebrations to enjoy: the Cristo de Esquipulas celebration, the Corpus Christi, national parties and the Torito Guapo Festival.

El Gaital Peak, set 3,000 meters above sea level, is another great location to visit. Its broad collection of animals and plants within 335 hectares of protected territory make it a unique destination within The Valley. It is also home to The National Wildlife Authority’s (ANAM) headquarters.

One of the most intriguing locations in the entire Anton Valley is La India Dormida. From a distance, the hills of the Anton Valley outline the profile of a youthful Indian woman that, based on native stories, fell madly in love with a Spaniard and wept over her great calamity of unrequited love until the natural world claimed her. Other stories say that the Sun transformed her into part of the hill to rescue her from a love that was not returned by an Indian fighter from her tribe.

But how do you get there?

Driving from Panama City, you can take the Interamerican Highway all the way to El Higo of Anton. Once there, you will turn right until you reach The Valley. The trip could take around 2 hours.

Weather Conditions in The Valley

You can look forward to tropical humidity and rainfall with temperatures around 70F on any given day.

What should you bring?

Be sure to bring ample bug repellent. Dress in durable jeans, sneakers or boots to make it easier for you to cope with rough terrain. Take along a hat and light coat to shield yourself from both sun and rain.
