Travel Insurance – Make Sure You Get What You Need

Personally I tend very much to avoid taking out travel insurance because I can’t seem to get over the thought that its all a con to make me spend more money and line the pockets of some big airline company or travel agency. However, what is the truth to this and what should we understand about travel insurance which will benefit us the most?

One thing to avoid doing is to book your travel insurance at the same time as you are booking your holiday or flight tickets. You will no doubt be offered insurance then and there but its wise to politely decline the offer. The best way to find the cheapest and best one to suit your needs is to go online and search via a travel insurance broker. This way you will have a big choice and time to ensure you get what you want.

Before you take out any travel insurance make sure you are not already covered with other insurance you already have such as your home insurance. No point in wasting money now is there?

When you have your short list then make sure you have medical insurance and that it is going to be adequate. This should also include costs for possible medical evacuation. If you are to be evacuated back home due to illness you could be looking at very high costs indeed!

What sort of activities are you going to be doing while on holiday? For example, scuba diving is very rarely covered with a typical holiday insurance cover so its best to take this as an add-on. Golf clubs too are often best taken as an add-on or with a specialist insurance its fine.

Do make a point of reading the small print to the insurance policy. General assumptions are often made only to find out when one needs compensation from their insurance its not forthcoming. If you check the small print first you are already aware of any exclusions.
